A podcaster and conspiracy theorist who was a witness for one of the failed lawsuits seeking to overturn the 2020 election will appear on the Ohio ballot in November as an independent candidate for secretary of state.

Maras originally tried to qualify for the Republican primary to challenge LaRose, but failed to make the ballot after issues with her signature petitions. LaRose won the primary comfortably against John Adams, another 2020 election denier. Peterson failed to collect 5,000 valid petition signatures. He also voted in the Republican primary in May, which would have disqualified his candidacy.
