About 19 states provide funding for after school programming, according to advocates. In Pennsylvania, supporters say for every child enrolled in an out of school program, four more kids are waiting to get in.

by Rep. Mike Schlossberg, D-Lehigh County, to create a program dubbed “Building Opportunity through Out-of-School Time” or BOOST, in the state Department of Education to support quality programs during young people’s out of school hours.

Additionally, they said it exposes children to learning experiences outside of the classroom, helps to build relationships with their peers, gain life skills and more in a safe, supportive environment.

Culver said, “Many after school programs aren’t able to find the funding they need to operate and as a result, many children miss out on this really valuable opportunity and this is why I believe we need to do so much more to support after school programming in Pennsylvania.”
