Public told to use face masks and stay at home when unwell as NHS battles wave of illnesses

People are being urged to use face masks and stay at home if they feel unwell as the NHS comes under increasing pressure amid a wave of winter illnesses.

Waiting times were likely to hit the highest level on record, with illnesses and limited resources fuelling a winter nightmare across the NHS, the Mirror reports. Prof Hopkins said in a statement: "It’s important to minimise the spread of infection in schools and other education and childcare settings as much as possible.

"Remember that flu vaccination is still available for all eligible groups and is the best protection against the virus. He added: “We think between 300 to 500 people are dying as a consequence of delays and problems with urgent and emergency care each week. We need to get a grip of this."We need to increase our capacity, make sure there are alternative ways so people aren’t all just funneled into the ambulance service and emergency department.”
