Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault met with his counterparts in Ottawa last week and said they’re all on the same page about the biodiversity strategy to protect 30 per cent of Canadian land and water by 2030.
He said the provinces and territories have a critical role to play in reaching the target because of their significant authority over land use — but some provinces will be able to conserve more land than others.
More than half of the provinces’ ministers had skipped out the meeting with the feds and Indigenous leaders during their first face-to-face meeting on the topic since the UN conference in December. However, Guilbeault said he’s confident he will have Alberta’s co-operation since their environment minister attended COP15 when the deal was struck in December.
