Under the blazing sun outside, the scene at First Christian Church in Katy felt chaotic– and angry. More than 100 people traded insults for hours with counter-protesters. Some on both sides hid their faces. Some on both sides displayed big guns.

Rev. Heather Tolleson, wearing rainbow eye shadow and a rainbow jacket, was choosing to see the anger-filled protest that afternoon in a positive light: More people had learned about the church and its message. “We have experienced a lot of love,” Tolleson said.Hostility faced the church. Some raised their hands in a Nazi salute. Fifty-year-old Tracy Shannon wore a shirt that said “drag queen culture is not for kids.” Shannon associated drag shows with erotica, drugs and pornography.
On the other side, people could not have felt more differently. A person holding a sign about protecting LGBTQ+ kids danced constantly, almost desperately. A 25-year-old gay man from Spring wore a sparkly blue nun’s habit and white face paint in line with his activist group and shielded this reporter from the sun with an umbrella.
Gen Peña, 35, wore rainbow socks in combat boots and a shirt explaining their reason for being there from the Austin area: “I swore an oath to fight enemies foreign and domestic.” This was a domestic enemy, in their opinion. They served in the Army and in the National Guard.“We’re fighting for everybody’s rights,” Peña said.
