Prosecutors: CBP officer charged with taking bribes to allow drugs to pass through border [Breaking]
Officer Leonard Darnell George faces a charge of receiving bribes by a public official, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Diego. Prosecutors allege that George allowed vehicles containing stashes of methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine and heroin to enter the United States from Mexico.
Federal prosecutors said George is charged along with and six other defendants with conspiracy to import and conspiracy to distribute drugs in the United States. If convicted of the bribery charge, George faces15 years in federal prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. “The vast majority of CBP officers are highly skilled, hard-working professionals dedicated to our mission of protecting the American public and we do not stand for those that would tarnish our badge,” said Sidney Aki, Director of Field Operations for CBP in San Diego, in a news release. “The San Diego Field Office will cooperate fully as the case proceeds.”
It was not immediately clear Monday whether George had an attorney. A detention hearing is scheduled for July 6 in San Diego federal court.
