UN Security Council expresses concern over military activity near Libya's capital Tripoli, calls on troops commanded by Khalifa Haftar to halt all military movements

UN chief Antonio Guterres leaves country with"heavy heart" after failed talks with military strongman Khalifa Haftar whose troops are trying to march to Tripoli, seat of the internationally recognised unity government.

The forces allied to military commander Khalifa Haftar also said they took control of the villages of Qasr ben Ghashir, Wadi al Rabie and Suq al Khamis south of Tripoli, in a statement. "I still hope it is possible to avoid a bloody confrontation in and around Tripoli," Guterres tweeted. "They also called on all forces to de-escalate and halt military activity. There can be no military solution to the conflict," he said.Earlier on Friday, pro-Haftar forces were pushed back from a key checkpoint less than 30 km from Tripoli, checking their lightning advance on the capital, a security source said.

Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al Sarraj shakes hands with Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres during the meeting in Tripoli, Libya, April 4, 2019. Just a single armoured vehicle was seen; the allegiance of its occupants was not immediately clear.
