The Bureau of Federal Prisons has faced mounting scrutiny following the death of Jeffrey Epstein at a New York jail.

One guard at the Metropolitan Correctional Center’s Special Housing Unit was on his fifth straight day of overtime, while a second was on mandatory overtime, an anonymous source close to the jail’s operation told. Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell on Saturday morning, weeks after he was taken off suicide watch.Epstein wasfor six days after he was found with injuries to his neck in July. He was not on suicide watch at the time of his death.
He had been left alone in his cell early on Saturday after his cellmate was transferred for reasons unknown, despite the Justice Department being told that Epstein would have a cellmate and beEpstein, 66, was arrested on July 6 on sex trafficking and conspiracy charges involving girls as young as 14 between 2002 and 2005, and faced 45 years in jail if found guilty. He was denied bail after he pleaded not guilty and was awaiting trial.
His death, which has provided fuel to scores of conspiracies, halts the criminal prosecution that sought to shed light on Epstein’s alleged crimes, his connections to powerful men and their alleged involvement.
