Guys, this is seriously getting out of hand... Wetherspoons boss Tim Martin has warned that the price of a pint could soar to a whopping £10 🍻
This comes as the British Beer and Pub Association claimed that a number of brands, including Foster’s and Old Speckled Hen, have cut their alcohol content by around 0.3% as part of a trend some are calling ‘drinkflation’.Mr Martin stressed it is a ‘bad idea’ for pubs to start making their beers weaker in an effort to save costs, but he later admitted JD Wetherspoons ‘might have to’ follow suit.
Lowering the alcohol content reduces the amount of tax payable, with most of the reductions saving 2-3p a sale. The publican branded this a ‘crazy’ move, adding: ‘But again, it is financed by tax because if you bring beer down to 3.4%, which is much lower than almost any beer you ever buy in the pub, you get a big tax break on the basis that of the incredibly stupid reasoning that people will drink less alcohol if they drink weak beer.
‘That’s just not the way people are. So I think it’s a bad idea. Brewers have jumped on the bandwagon, they can’t resist a 25 pence tax break, but we are going to try and avoid doing it.’
