🔴 Pressure on Liz Truss to raise benefits is mounting amid revelations that charities are running out of food to give to low-income families
Baroness Boycott, the chair of Feeding Britain, asked the Treasury minister in the Lords: “Over the last few weeks we have found that the food in our food banks and social supermarkets, we’ve actually now been running out in 20 minutes. So people who come in on later shifts get no food.
“What do you think we should say to them when they ask us the question about why even this charity is now in short supply because so many people are using it?” The minister, Lord Davies of Gower, replied: “I take the point… but I can only repeat that we will have to wait and see what the CPI [consumer prices index] is and the Government will make the announcement at the appropriate time.”
Ministers and Tory MPs have made clear their opposition to the Prime Minister’s reported plans to renege on Boris Johnson’s pledge to raise benefits in line with inflation, which is currently close to 10 per cent.
