: President Donald Trump offered a meeting with President Xi Jinping and appeared to link a U.S-China trade deal to a “humane” end to the political crisis that has gripped Hong Kong for the last three months. Trump's tweets follows the two-day shutdown of Hong Kong Airport by protesters, reports of Chinese military buildup on Hong Kong's border, and escalating rhetoric from Chinese officials and state media condemning pro-democracy protesters as “terrorists.
Stepping up his comments about unrest in the city, Trump claimed China was losing jobs and companies amid the deadlocked trade war. He said he had"zero doubt" that President Xi wants to solve the crisis, and tweeted:"Of course China wants to make a deal. Let them work humanely with Hong Kong first!" It comes as Trumpa 10% tariff on billions of dollars worth of Chinese goods to minimise the impact on holiday shopping.
Trump earlier appealed for calm on reports that China was assembling military equipment on the border with Hong Kong. His suggestion is unlikely to be received well by Beijing as it has repeatedly called for"foreign forces" to stop interfering in Hong Kong's affairs. In a speech in central London on Thursday, China’s ambassador to the U.K. Liu Xiaoming said: “Evidence shows that the situation in Hong Kong would not have deteriorated so much had it not been for the interference and assignment of foreign forces.
