A book drive was held Oct. 6 at the Presbyterian Church of Western Springs by a group dedicated to getting books in the homes of less fortunate children in the Chicagoland.

When in second grade, Rey Flores got seriously interested in books, Bernie’s Book Bank was there to help him feed his habit. Now, entering his senior year in high school, he’s returning the favor by serving as a volunteer at the group’s book drive at the Presbyterian Church of Western Springs. The Oct. 6 event was the third book drive conducted at the Western Springs church by the group dedicated to getting books in the homes of less fortunate children in the Chicagoland.

4 million free children’s books throughout the Chicagoland,” Kristen Daniels, executive director of Bernie’s Book Bank, said in an email. Since its founding, Bernie’s has already distributed 24.5 million books since its beginnings, and with the 450,000 books processed Friday at PCWS, it looks on track to hit the 25 million mark by the end of 2023. “My part of this is that I find donors who have outgrown their children’s books,” Carol Collier, community development lead, said.
