Premier League clubs worried for player welfare ahead of New Year fixture pile-up It is unlikely that any games postponed this weekend will be played until January, adding more fixtures to an already jam-packed schedule.
Some games could theoretically be played in the week beginning 23 January – which has been set aside for League Cup semi-finals – or in the first week of February. But with the Champions League returning on 14 February, there is very little give in this season’s condensed schedule.

A shortened World Cup will be played over a month before the season resumes on 26 December. Some executives still believe next weekend’s Saturday games will be played – policing commitments permitting.
The league only informed clubs of the games being called off shortly before a joint statement was released confirming the entire fixture list – along with grassroots and non-league matches – was to be postponed.
