There are 161 high school students in the country, and only three in Ohio, who have been named 2023 U.S. Presidential Scholars, and Highland Heights is home to one of them. Congratulations, Pranav!
That local student is Pranav Sompalle, a just-graduated senior at Mayfield High School, whose application for the honor and accompanying required essay more than caught the attention of theJust over 5,000 of the 3.7 million U.S.
The 18-year-old Sompalle, who became a candidate through his high test scores, learned he had made it to the semifinal round in April. The judging to get to the semifinal round does not include the essay. The essay, however, plays a key role in taking the final step to being named a Presidential Scholar. In Sompalle’s case, his essay topic was the Bosnian War that took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1992 and 1995.Sompalle’s essay was obviously a winner with the commission.
“I’m also really interested in biochemistry -- biology and chemistry -- that type of science,” he said. Sompalle finished first in academic ranking in his Mayfield High School class with a 4.0 grade point average and a 4.81 weighted GPA. “I want each of these remarkable students to know: Your passion and intellect, pursuit of excellence and spirit of service are exactly what our country needs. On behalf of President Biden, I am delighted to join your family, friends and communities in celebrating your accomplishments.
