Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are growing increasingly alarmed about developments in the Middle East
Sen. Mark Warner left a lengthy classified briefing on Iran Thursday afternoon with a provocative reaction: "It's very important that more members hear this story."next week as a wave of anxiety over possible military engagement with Iran grips Capitol Hill.
On the Senate floor, Sen. Marco Rubio described the situation as a "serious and potentially imminent threat to U.S. forces" and said the Trump administration is right to reposition military assets and be in a "position to retaliate" should Iran lash out at U.S. interests in Iraq or the Middle East.Sign Up
"We are not going to start a war. But if we are attacked by Iran's proxies, we are going to respond against those proxies and hold Iran responsible. And they're going to pay a price for that as well. Who could disagree with thethat if we are attacked, we have a right to defend ourselves and respond?" said Rubio, a member of the Intelligence Committee, which has been briefed on situation with Iran.
But liberals were quickly working to play down the threat as a consequence of President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the nuclear agreement with Iran,In a statement, the Congressional Progressive Caucus warned that Bolton and Trump have "opened the door for another endless war."about developments in the Middle East, with Democrats worried that Trump could slide into war with Iran and Republicans more concerned about Iranian actions.
