A giant asteroid is set to hurl incredibly close by planet Earth on Wednesday
Officially named Asteroid 2006 HV5, it's forecast to travel by the globe 1.5 million miles away - or 6.3 times the distance from the Earth to the Moon, while flying at some 38,000mph.
But there's no need to panic, as the distance is still "plenty of breathing room" according to Dr Susanna Kohler from the American Astronomical Society. The astrophysicist confirmed it likely won't be visible to humans, unless you have access to hi-tech equipment. She added that 2006 HV5 is listed as having a rarity of ‘2’ in NASA’s Centre for Near Earth Object Studies’ database. That means that, on average, an asteroid of this size or larger will only come this close to Earth once a year.
2006 HV5 is one of over 31,000 near-Earth objects [NEOs] that have been identified so far, with many more believed to be awaiting discovery out in the darkness of space.
