Rev. Robert J. McClory, bishop of our Gary Catholic Diocese, spent last weekend at our small farm church gathering for the annual parish picnic.
I attended with my parents, oldest brother Tom and oldest niece Bethany and her family for both the mass celebrated in the North Judson town park and the picnic meal which followed.McClory, 59, was ordained a bishop and installed as the fifth Bishop of Gary during a special mass held at Holy Angels Cathedral on Feb. 11, 2020. While I’m the youngest of five children, McClory is also the youngest, but of four children, and his parents Jim and Ann McClory are now both deceased.
Our church priest, Father Terry Bennis, told the bishop that my parents Chester and Peggy will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary in just a few weeks on Sept. 5, prompting McClory to call my parents to stand during mass for a special prayer and blessing for their nuptials and the vows they first exchanged in 1953.
McClory also thanked me for a column I penned last year and published in February 2022 about the bishop’s last visit to our farm church and for sharing a recipe for the delicate nut roll pastries baked and served by our church secretary Peggy Oakley. There’s no denying the TV influence of Sheen, who was born and raised in tiny El Paso, Illinois and later ordained a priest with the Diocese of Peoria before his later archbishop status in New York.
