Family medicine specialist Dr. Christopher Osan was appointed the new Porter County Board of Health member by a two-to-one vote of the Porter County Board of Commissioners Monday night, bypassing a list of five candidates forwarded by the board of health itself, to the ire of some and the approval of others in the full chamber.

at the last commissioners meeting over remarks she made on social media regarding the COVID-19 vaccine. State statute requires her replacement be of the same political party, which is Republican.County attorney Scott McClure clarified for those present that state statute declares the health board “shall” put together a list of five candidates when it has an open seat and the county commissioners “may” pull from that list.

Blaney said she had heard good things about Osan, but that all five on the board’s list are Republican. “We are not appointing for a country club,” Biggs replied. “If you’re allowing the board to appoint its own members that’s basically what you’re creating.”During public comment at the end of the meeting many people spoke up on the subject.

Regnitz replied that it was her understanding that the list compiled by the board of health was prepared before its meeting and at the exclusion of some of the members. As Regnitz and Biggs excluded Blaney from their plan to nominate Osan, someone from the audience shouted. Health Department Administrator Carrie Gschwind confirmed Tuesday afternoon that she had received an email last week stating Michael had resigned effective immediately. Commissioners appointed him, Jepsen and Robyn Lane to the board earlier this year.
