San Antonio Spurs’ Gregg Popovich inches closer to coaching history
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich moved within a game of tying Don Nelson for the most regular-season coaching victories in NBA history with Friday night’s win in Washington.MIAMI — Spurs coach Gregg Popovich arrived at FTX Arena on Saturday with a chance to make history.“Of all nights, tonight?” Spoelstra fake-groaned before the Heat’s game against the Spurs.
With 22 games left including Saturday’s, the odds of Popovich catching and eventually passing Nelson have reached nearly 100 percent. It marked the first time Collins has been able to play in back-to-back games since his return from ankle surgery.Friday’s scoring outburst in Washington marked the Spurs’ most points since a 161-153 victory over Denver on Nov. 7, 1990.
