Poor housing is why Blackpool is worst in England for poverty, says resort MP Scott Benton
It's often found at the wrong end of league tables ranking the worst areas of the country for poverty, deprivation and obesity.
Mr Benton, leading a debate on levelling up and Blackpool, added: "If we can tackle some of the grot-spots and the awful conditions in the private sector rental market, it will invariably improve people’s life chances." He said Blackpool was the most deprived local authority in England with eight of the top 10 most deprived communities.
He then went on to list what he described as "a compelling but lengthy list of the investment that we have received in Blackpool since 2019". Other local investment includes £8.6m for the future high streets fund, £10m on Blackpool's opportunity area to improve local educational outcomes and £20m on electric buses.
And he said to Minister Felicity Buchan: "Improving people’s housing conditions in those areas would be transformative, not just for the next few years but for generations ahead in Blackpool.
