Experts say waterborne transmission of virus is 'exceedingly low'
The county health department is offering patrons of a private swim center in Carlsbad precautionary monkeypox vaccination after an employee working at the facility in early September tested positive.
“It has now been 10 days since we were informed of the positive case, and there are no known cases of this spreading to any of our customers, students or our staff members.” “We think offering vaccination in this kind of situation is the rational thing to do,” Wooten said. “We’re not mandating or saying ‘you must,’ but we are offering vaccination because people might feel more comfortable being vaccinated knowing this particular scenario or situation.”that the infected individual did have a rash on the days indicated. There is some ambiguity, she added, as to whether monkeypox was truly involved as one test came back positive but another came back negative.
“Just by the very dilution factor of water itself, I would not have any concerns about someone who swam in a pool who had monkeypox and I swam in the lane next to them,” Osterholm said. “It wouldn’t bother me at all.”Swim instructors routinely hold young students up in the water while they practice their skills, and it’s possible to share other materials, such as towels, which could theoretically transfer pox secretions to an uninfected person.
