In a speech at the Arctic Council, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Moscow and Beijing have been acting aggressively in the region threatening its stability and future economic prospects.

By Carol Morello Carol Morello National reporter focusing on foreign policy and State Department Email Bio Follow May 6 at 10:22 AM Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned of the dangers of Russian militarization and Chinese investment in the Arctic, a region he described “an arena of global power and competition.”

Russia has built three new military bases in the Arctic, restored Soviet-era bases, and proposed teaming up with China to build a new sea route for cargo shipments between Asia and Europe. Pompeo said that, even in international waters in the Arctic, Moscow already demands that other nations get its permission to use the route.

“Just because the Arctic is a place of wilderness does not mean it should become a place of lawlessness,” Pompeo said. “It need not be the case. And we stand ready to be sure it does not become so.” “We need to examine these activities closely, and we keep the experience of other nations in mind. China’s pattern of aggressive behavior elsewhere will inform how it treats the Arctic,” Pompeo said.
