Sir Graham Brady tells joncraig the requirement for candidates to have support from 20 other Tory MPs will ensure that the process to replace Boris Johnson as PM will be concluded 'smoothly and swiftly'. Latest: 📺 Sky 501 and YouTube
Rules allow for 'any serious candidate' to be nominated, says Bradychief political correspondent Jon CraigHe said the reasoning behind demanding 20 backers for each candidate is to not make it impossible for"any serious candidate".
"And he's confirmed that they will announce the result of the new leader on Monday, 5 September which is the date when the House of Commons is back after the summer recess."Sir Graham Brady has confirmed that potential Tory leadership candidates will require the backing of 20 MPs for their nomination to be accepted tomorrow when the process begins.
He says:"Nominations will open and close tomorrow, we will have a first ballot on Wednesday and a second ballot is likely on Thursday. He says the Conservative Party will get down to the final two candidates"as quickly as that happens"."I would hope that we would do it relatively quickly," he says."We will have the first two ballots this week."Asked about Boris Johnson remaining in this role, he says:"That's not my responsibility, we are dealing with our responsibilities as quickly as we reasonably can.
They could increase the number of Conservative MPs needed to support a candidate for them to be on the ballot, which could reduce the number of candidates who have already declared - and could reduce the time needed to declare a winner.Leaks have become commonplace in politics, but this time there was actual water pouring into the House of Commons.
