Voters in Tamworth and Mid Bedfordshire have been casting their ballots in by-elections triggered by the resignation of their Conservative MPs. Follow live updates as counting gets under way.
Polls closed just over an hour ago in the Tamworth and Mid Bedfordshire by-elections and the counts are under way.The boxes containing the thousands of individual ballot papers have been delivered to the count locations and each paper is being counted by hand by election workers.What is the counting process?There are specific rules set down the Electoral Commission to count votes at each election.
The election workers then sort the ballot papers into stacks of votes for each individual candidate into bundles of a pre-determined number .Each bundle is then recounted by another election worker to ensure accuracy.Any 'doubtful ballot papers' - on which the vote may be unclear - are set aside to be judged by the returning officer .The totals are then collated and announced by the returning officer.
