Police shot and killed a possibly suicidal 33-year-old man as he walked along a Sandy street early Sunday, said Sgt. Greg Moffitt on Sunday afternoon.
Around 1 a.m. Sunday, police from the Sandy Police Department were dispatched on reports of a person who was having a mental health crisis and was possibly suicidal, Moffitt said. As an officer was on his way to the area, police learned that the person had left a residence in the neighborhood. That officer found the man walking along 1000 East at around 11600 South, officials said.
During their interaction, “the subject posed an immediate threat to our officer by his actions,” Moffitt said, and the officer shot the man, who was declared dead at the scene. The man’s name has not yet been released, pending notification of family members. Moffitt said the man was from the area. The Salt Lake County Officer Involved Critical Incident Protocol Team 1 will be conducting an investigation of the shooting and reporting their findings to the Salt Lake County district attorney. Moffitt said that the Sandy Police Department will also be doing an internal investigation of its policies and procedures.Sunday’s shooting marked the seventh police shooting in Utah so far this year, according to a database maintained by The Salt Lake Tribune.
