A police officer who repeatedly raped an underage girl, recorded her abuse and then tried to delete the evidence has been jailed. Hertfordshire Police’s James Ford was found guilty of 10 counts of sexual abuse against a girl under 13 on Wednesday.

The rapist must serve two thirds of his custodial term before he can be considered for release on licence. Addressing the defendant directly, Justice Simon said: ‘As a serving police officer you, of all people, should have protected society against sexual abusers, and you acted as a perpetrator of such vile crimes yourself.’The rapist showed no reaction as he was led to the cells
