Police chiefs are considering whether to make an admission that the UK’s forces are institutionally racist.

An inquiry into how the police can better serve minority communities is creating pressure for forces to accept the label ‘institutionally racist’

The National Police Chief’s Council has appointed barrister Abimbola Johnson to chair an independent board scrutinising promised reforms regarding race and policing. A source quoted by the Guardian said some police chiefs are hesitant to use the term ‘institutionally racist’ because they are ‘worried about sending out a message that nothing has changed since Macpherson’.

The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Cressida Dick, last year denied her force was institutionally racist, telling MPs she did not find the label ‘helpful’.
