How Horizons succeeded where Black and White failed.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Pokémon anime has been through many different eras over the course of its 25-year-long existence, some better received than others. One of the most controversial eras of the Pokémon anime among many fans is the Black and White era, the anime associated with the Unova region and the generation 5 Pokémon games.
When looking at Black and White, it's easy to see how they attempted to emulate the first season again: Ash starts with his mom and Professor Oak before going off on an adventure with Pikachu, where he teams up with two characters who were gym leaders in the games . Ash catches all three starters, as he did in Kanto, and they even echo his originals, with both fire starter Pokémon having been abused by their previous trainer before Ash obtains them.
Pokémon Horizons, on the other hand, didn't attempt to keep Ash around, and found a new Pikachu as a way to keep the mascot in the anime. By introducing new protagonists, it made sense to start over from the very beginning, to have Liko and Roy learn their own lessons across their own story.
