Ash and Pikachu had an early brush with death.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Pokémon anime usually plays things pretty safe, not putting its characters in too much danger . There's one big exception to this fairly early on in the series, though, where Ash and Pikachu have an out-of-body experience.
In the episode "Tower of Terror," Ash is setting out for the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town, hoping to find a Ghost-type Pokémon that he can use to defeat Sabrina, a wildly powerful psychic and leader of Saffron City's gym. When the group arrives at night, Misty and Brock are afraid to enter the building at night, but are eventually cajoled into going in.
Haunter Extracts Ash's Spirit From His Body The ghost Pokémon remove Ash and Pikachu from their bodies upon seeing the incident, causing them to take on ghost forms. Ash and Pikachu join the ghosts in playing and pulling pranks on their friends. The ghosts try to entice Ash and Pikachu into staying and playing with them forever, but Ash declines, saying he needs to get back on his journey.
Ghost-type Pokémon are often deceptively dark in their designs, and would continue to be big threats, such as when Litwick nearly killed Team Rocket. That only came close, though; here, Ash and Pikachu's spirits actually leave their bodies, rendering them dead by just about any definition. In the original airing, Misty even says the word "die," although this was later edited out.
Haunter actually ended up traveling with Ash temporarily, and was critical to breaking Sabrina out of the dangerous state she was in. Still, the episode itself is a surprisingly dark one for as early in the series as it is, and shockingly doesn't seem to have drawn much negative attention at the time. Aside from the movies, this Pokémon episode constitutes Ash and Pikachu's closest brush with death, and it was treated as just another Pokémon-of-the-week story.
