It’s difficult to determine the distance from home plate to the outfield fence at Point Loma Nazarene’s Carroll B. Land Stadium.At 317 feet down the lines and 360 feet to “deep” center — according to former PLNU coach Jack Northam — there was no sense encouraging players to swing for the fences.
PLNU made the most of it, banging even homers in a decisive 21-5 victory — following an earlier 7-4 win — that advanced the Sea Lions to the Super Regionals. While seemingly routine flies were carrying out of the park, PLNU pitchers had the good sense to keep runners off the bases when Northwest Nazarene went deep.
It was the same way Kemp led off the first game. This time teammate Scott Anderson made it back-to-back homers with a towering blast over the trees in center.
