A labor dispute is playing out in the projections rooms as the Cleveland International Film Festival moves to Playhouse Square’s theaters.

The International Association of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 160 has a contract with Playhouse Square, Galinac said. When shows are held that need a projectionist, they call up a union member to work the event.

But Playhouse Square is telling Galinac and Dan O’Malley, leader of the North Shore AFL-CIO, that Playhouse Square isn’t putting on the show; it’s just letting the film festival use space. The CIFF has been held at Tower City Cinemas in the past, which was not unionized at the time of the last festivalO’Malley said Playhouse Square has refused to negotiate on the issue. And he said leaders at the film festival haven’t returned phone calls or spoken with the union — which Playhouse Square he said advised CIFF to do.

Galinac said the festival would have been about 12 days of work for union members. They generally work at Playhouse Square by request.“The notion that they will be forced to vacate their own workspace and cede their craft to non-union workers goes against the bedrock principles of the labor movement - principles we know are widely shared in this Proud Union Town,” O’Malley said in a statement.Wednesday because they had been trying to negotiate with Playhouse Square for a long time.
