He was credited with helping make the Steelers four-time Super Bowl champions during his time.
But Haley’s biggest contribution to the Steelers’ incredible run of four Super Bowl wins came as the team’s director of player personnel from 1971-1990. He is credited as playing a large part in Pittsburgh’s incredible 1974 draft class that included four future Pro Football Hall of Famers — receivers Lynn Swann and John Stallworth, linebacker Jack Lambert and lineman Mike Webster.
“We lost an amazing football mind and a better man with the passing of Dick Haley,” Steelers president Art Rooney II wrote in a statement on the team’s Twitter account. “He was a valuable part of this franchise for 23 years, the first 4 of those as a player and the final 19 as a member of the Player Personnel Department. Dick played an instrumental role in our unprecedented success in the 1970s during the second part of his career.
