Piers Morgan says his new show will “cancel the cancel culture” and “annoy all the right people”. That category doubtless includes Britain’s existing news broadcasters

In doing so he irked Rupert Murdoch, the newspaper’s owner, who publicly rebuked his editor and reportedly said “the young man went over the top.” But Mr Murdoch—whose interests include Fox News in America—has long recognised the value of controversy.
News Corp has been mulling TalkTV, or something like it, for years. In 2018 Mr Murdoch’s bid to take full control of Sky, a European pay-TV giant, failed, leaving the tycoon with no stake in a British broadcaster for the first time in decades. He considered investing in GB News, a right-wing news channel which began broadcasting in June 2021 and presents rolling coverage from the trenches of the culture wars.
The first is the sheer volume of journalism that News UK already produces. As well as TalkRadio—and its more athletic sibling, TalkSport—the company publishes newspapers including the. In 2020 it began broadcasting Times Radio, a speech station that does a passable impression of Radio 4, the BBC’s high-brow station. With TalkTV, “the journalistic talent that is already inside the building in News UK can be deployed in ever more ways,” says Douglas McCabe of Enders Analysis, a research firm.
