In his first interview since resigning as chancellor, Hammond told the BBC: “Leaving the EU without a deal would be as much of a betrayal of the referendum, as not leaving at all.” He added that during the referendum campaign in 2016, the British people had been told that a Brexit deal would be the “easiest ever done.” Negotiations have been ongoing for three years.
He added that he wanted to see Johnson “delivering a great deal for Britain,” and that people want to maintain a close trading relationship with the EU to protect British jobs and minimize disruption.by making unreasonable demands on Europe. Hammond told the BBC that a no-deal Brexit would cause significant harm to the U.K. economy and potentially, irreparable damage to the union uniting England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
