Dr. Horace DeLisser, a trustee of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and associate dean for diversity and inclusion at Penn's Perelman School of Medicine, works with college students Bryson Houston, Lamina Diakho and Boby Daniel during a pilot session for the Hinkson Holloway Mentorship Program in 2022.

“The idea is to put Black men in a space where they can be vulnerable and feel empowered and be part of a cheer circle to find motivation and be a source of motivation.”The program is named after two prominent Philadelphia doctors — DeHaven Hinkson and Edward E. Holloway, who broke racial barriers to become the college’s first Black fellows. Founded in 1787, The College of Physicians didn’t admit Hinkson or Holloway until 1952.

nationwide, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges, a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C. The proportion of Black male doctors hasn’t changed much since the 1970s.are Black or African American.
