Phil Tank: Saskatoon gets some closure on Remai Modern fiscal fiasco yxe

The most recent estimate means the cost has more than doubled from what was first proposed in 2009 when the Mendel Art Gallery board announcedThe project was dogged by opposition from the beginning, particularly from those enraged by the abandonment of the Mendel and its legacy. The new River Landing location evolved out of a strategy to expand the Mendel to 45,000 square feet that had been discussed since 2001.
The gallery as originally pitched was supposed to be 120,000 sq. ft. — more than twice the size of the proposed Mendel expansion — with a 250-stall parkade. Remai Modern as built boasts 130,000 sq. ft., but only 154 parking stalls.
