PEBBLE BEACH, Calif.--One year after he added indignity to his long history of torment at the U.S. Open, Phil Mickelson on Thursday suffered another kind of embarrassment. He missed one of the shortest putts imaginable, from tap-in range on the par-4 third hole at Pebble Beach.

On the tournament website, the length of the putt was listed at 22 inches. Fox, on its broadcast, put the length at just 18 inches. Mickelson called it a 1-footer. But it didn’t take a precise radar measurement to see what a rare and astounding miss...
