There is growing awareness and concern about exposure to PFAS, so-called "forever chemicals." Is this a problem everywhere, or just in a few areas? However, much of the PFAS contamination that impacts people may not even come from their water. People are exposed to these chemicals from many of the products that PFAS are used in, including food packaging, cosmetics, cleaning products, building materials and clothing.
Cities may also be able to draw from alternative wells or surface water bodies to meet the proposed limits without adding new treatment. While this is a wonderful low-cost way to decrease contamination, it points to a major disparity in environmental justice; more rural and less well-resourced utilities are unlikely to have this option.Removing PFAS from water can be expensive. The estimated cost to meet the proposed limits ranges from $772 million to as high as $47 billion.
