You almost feel sorry for Goodell, but then again, he asked for this kind of authority in 2007. He wanted to have these wide-ranging powers to punish NFL troublemakers. So far, it has been a reputation-sullying burden for Goodell, and as the years pass, it only grows more complicated. Now, with Kraft, Goodell has arrived at the ultimate no-win situation.Let’s go back 12 years, when Goodell was still an infant commissioner, and he made the decision that ruined his tenure before it really began.
Problem is, Goodell has a history of being a dithering disciplinarian, always peeking into the arena of public opinion before he acts. And then, trying to please as many people as possible and prove his backbone sturdy, he can’t win. Over a dozen years, Goodell has created a vicious cycle in which his inconsistent punishment practices boomerang and make the public scrutinize his managerial aptitude.
When Goodell first instituted the conduct policy, Keyshawn Johnson had just retired from the NFL and started his broadcasting career. He made a prescient remark about the decision. His thought was practical: Goodell’s motivation was to curb the rash of player arrests, but by going this far, he was walking himself too far down a plank.
But the Kraft scandal is different. The only thing comparable would be the six-game suspension and $500,000 fine Goodell levied on Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay after he pleaded guilty in 2014 of driving while intoxicated. Kraft has a greater status, however. He’s one of the two or three most influential owners in the NFL. He runs a dynastic organization that, despite several messy and controversial episodes, refuses to fall off its championship standard.
