The accident was reported at 5:30 p.m. near Ant Canyon, about 10 miles upriver from Kernville.
Swift-water rescue teams from the Tulare and Kern county sheriff’s offices responded to the call, and four people were pulled from the river. The sheriff’s statement said the rescuers were “working to recover the body of another person.”in California rivers in the past two months, as the melting of the deep Sierra Nevada snowpack has caused rivers to run faster and colder than usual.
The stretch of the Kern River that the accident occurred on had been been closed for recreational use since May 5 because of the spring runoff hazards. In addition to the Kern, Tulare County closed parts of the Kings, St. John’s, Kaweah and Tule rivers.
