The video, which was released by NASA on Friday, was taken on Aug. 30, 2023, the 899th Martian day, or sol, of the mission.
The Perseverance team used the data from the video to measure the distance, speed, and size of the dust devil. They found that it was about 2.5 miles away from the rover, at a location nicknamed "Thorofare Ridge," and moving east to west at about 12 mph .
They also estimated its height by looking at its shadow. Mark Lemmon, a planetary scientist at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado, and a member of the Perseverance science team said that they did not see the top of the dust devil, but the shadow it cast gave them a good indication of its height. He said that most dust devils are vertical columns, and if this one was configured that way, its shadow would indicate it was about 1.2 miles in height.
Dust devils can form on Earth as well when warm air rises and mixes with cooler air. But on Mars, they can grow to be much larger than those on Earth. They are more frequent during the spring and summer months in Mars' northern hemisphere, where
