Northerners flocked to the South for cheap homes and abundant jobs. Now some are ready to pack up and leave.
to provide this kind of help to their workers. Data from Catalyst shows that this is essential for many — a third of respondents said they could not afford to travel for an abortion without help from their employer — but also shows that these perks might not cut it. Forty-four percent of workers said their organizations are not doing enough to facilitate access to abortion — a number that jumps to 57% among women ages 18 to 34.
The results of these elections may push waffling Southerners in one direction or another."I kind of have settled into hope for this November's election, which I think a lot of people are hoping for," Maddy Hauser said.Of course, people often talk big when it comes to moving for political reasons but don't follow through. Few Democrats moved to Canada during the Bush presidency or because of Trump, and few Republicans fled during the Obama years.
Sarah Jensen is also wrestling with a similar choice. Jensen, who works in healthcare, moved to North Carolina in 2013, first to Fuquay-Varina, near the state capital, and then to Raleigh. She's lived in conservative states her entire adult life — she lived in Utah before moving East — and she's getting tired of it.
Even some lifelong Southerners are having these conversations. Ken Whiteside is a fourth-generation Texan who's lived in Austin his entire life. But he just got back from a road trip to New York and Massachusetts to shop for a new place to live. Even if Beto O'Rourke wins the governorship in Texas, he believes that the politics there will remain"abysmal.""I just don't want to live in a place where there's so little regard for human beings," said Whiteside.
And some strongly believe that you shouldn't leave your state — you should stay and fight. Chuck Bryan is an IT professional who moved to North Carolina from Florida five years ago. He said that while he has empathy for Southerners who flee, he thinks they should fight to improve their region before giving up.
