The Chinese President will not back down over protests and will try even harder to eliminate dissent

China’s strongman President Xi Jinping will not allow protests to undermine his ruthless Covid policy in 1989. But widespread protests in China are the most significant seen since that massacre., with millions taking to the streets. However, Beijing could write off those scenes as a local problem – as teething difficulties after the territory was absorbed by China. Not so now. These new protests are happening in at least 10 cities and they feature direct challenges to President Xi’s authority.

Xi is also unlikely to back down from his zero-Covid policy, which is supposed to eliminate the virus through mass testing, quarantining, and locking down entire cities and regions. There are three big flaws with that plan. Doing it for three years “without any seeming purpose or endgame” doesn’t make sense for public health. It can’t gloss over the failure to vaccinate enough elderly Chinese people or the refusal to accept foreign jabs.stubbornness is also damaging China’s economy . Lastly, it is politically perilous for him: this week’s protests show pent-up rage from three years of misery.

Yet an about-turn is unlikely because abandoning zero-Covid would be embarrassing and inter-preted as weakness. So China’s strongman will squeeze public and private life ever tighter, trying to eliminate dissent and Covid-19 without any chance of succeeding in doing either.
