Sen. Ryan Aument is calling for more parental control over sexually explicit content in school books.

State Sen. Ryan Aument from Lancaster County supports Senate Bill 7, which would call on Pennsylvania school administrators to flag books and curriculum that contain sexually explicit material. The content would be off-limits to most students. Only students whose parents sign an 'opt-in' form would be exposed to the content. The bill was the subject of a Senate Education Committee hearing on Tuesday at the state Capitol in Harrisburg.

He said school leaders in districts should set aside extremely sexually explicit material and then allow parents to sign off on it for their children if they wish. Opponents of the bill – including Sharon Ward of the Education Law Center, who testified at the hearing – said it infringes on students' rights. She said it amounts to a book ban and would hurt minorities. She said they are often the subject of banned books.Aument said this is not a book ban or discriminatory toward minorities.
