After the first day of a special session on providing relief for child sexual abuse victims produced little in the way of progress on that issue, Gov. Tom Wolf scolds lawmakers for focusing on other issues and political game-playing.
Wolf, who only has a week left in his term of office, released a statement on Tuesday expressing his frustration.
“This special session is meant to provide a mechanism to help prevent this bipartisan issue from becoming entangled with partisan topics. Last fall, we promised action to get this done. I’m asking Republican and Democratic leaders in the General Assembly to complete this vital work. Answer the call you signed up for as elected officials and public servants. Pennsylvania is waiting.”
The House of Representatives, meanwhile, got tangled up in a dispute over new operating rules for the chamber and Speaker Mark Rozzi’s failure to abide by a commitment to switch his party affiliation from Democrat to independent. Republican leaders said Rozzi made that promise to them in exchange for their votes for him to become speaker in the narrowly divided chamber.
The House cancelled its special session days scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. The Senate is in session on Tuesday after gaveling in and out of the special session on Monday without taking any action and moved on to address other business on Monday.
