On the defensive side, Penn State was elite last season. They will need to replace Joey Porter Jr. and Ji’Ayir Brown in the secondary, as both are now playing on Sundays. Kalen King returns which is a huge plus for the unit. The pass-rush and linebacking core remain amongst the best in the nation.
James Franklin is back for his 10th season as head coach of the Nittany Lions, and he’s one of the best coaches in the country. Through nine seasons at Penn State, Franklin has a 78-36 record. Franklin has four top-10 finishes and four 11-win seasons on his resume. Franklin remains the only coach in program history outside of Joe Paterno to achieve a double-digit win season.
West Virginia’s defensive unit is average and there’s not much that needs to be said. Dante Stills will be missed on the interior of the defensive line and it’ll be interesting to see if Penn State can run the ball efficiently without his presence as a run-stopper.When betting on games in Week 1, we are afforded the luxury of watching the market get molded over the span of many weeks.
It’s worth noting that earlier this summer, the total for this game opened at 55 points. We’ve seen one-way movement on the total, and that’s on the under. It’s even dipped below the key number of 51-points. That line movement makes sense to me. West Virginia’s new offense seems like it will be based around running the ball behind their offensive line. With the new clock rules and a lot of running plays, the game gets short quickly. On the other side, I see a scenario where Penn State gets out to an early lead and then shortens the game by handing the ball to Nick Singleton and their stable of running backs.
