Football pays tribute to one of its greatest icons, with Sir Geoff Hurst hailing the Brazil legend as 'the greatest of all time'
Brazil forward Neymar has led tributes to the “eternal” Pele as the world of football mourns the legendary forward’sThe only player to win the World Cup three times and widely considered one of the greatest footballers of all time, Pele scored a record 77 goals for his country – matched only by Neymar – and was credited with scoring over 1,200 goals over the course of his career .
“Before Pele, ’10’ was just a number,” Neymar wrote. “I read that phrase somewhere, at some point in my life. But that sentence, beautiful, is incomplete. I would say that before Pele, football was just a sport. Pele changed everything. “He turned football into art, into entertainment. He gave a voice to the poor, to black people and especially gave visibility to Brazil. Football and Brazil have raised their status thanks to the king! He is gone, but his magic will remain. Pele is eternal.”
“The king of football has left us but his legacy will never be forgotten,” France striker Kylian Mbappe wrote on Twitter.
