Paul O'Grady's husband Andre Portasio has spoken out for the first time about the tragic death of the TV star, who died a year ago today
Paul O'Grady's beloved dog found comfort on the star's shoulder as his devoted husband struggled to save him in their home located in the breathtaking Kent countryside, once filled with joy and laughter. Now, the house stands silent except for the gentle ticking of clocks echoing through the halls.
"I wanted to be as far away from it as possible in New Zealand," he confides, the planned trip due to happen in a few days time. He doesn't feel ready to face the kitchen that holds the heartbreaking reminder of where he found Paul. Cherishing his husband's lasting legacy and expressing sincere thanks for the love people showed Paul after his passing are important to Andre. But he also wishes to share the personal circumstances of the heartrending night a year ago.
After the afternoon's meeting, Paul would have usually walked their five dogs alone, but this time asked Andre along as he wanted to show him some new trees he had bought. Andre adds: "He was on wonderful form and then we settled down in the living room and switched on the telly to catch up on Kent ITV News."
"Andre tried desperately to save Paul's life. I don't know how long it took for the ambulance to arrive but by the end I was exhausted," he says. "But somehow Paul's dog Arfur, who is one of his favourites, escaped and he nuzzled his face as he always did on Paul's shoulder, as if to say 'wake up'. It was just heartbreaking. "I don't want to be anywhere near my kitchen where I found him, and be reminded of what happened."
Andre is often reminded of his husband, sometimes by a song or the smell of food cooking, and at other times by the emptiness of his home. "Just before he died, Paul started painting pictures of lavender on the ceiling of our guest cottage," Andre explains. He adds: "It makes me sad but at the same time gives me great comfort knowing that I shared my life with him."
Andre Vincent, a close friend of the late Paul O'Grady, has been sorting through his belongings and setting aside items for donation."I feel the audience at large would absolutely love to see them again, and it's weighing on me very heavily how I take his legacy forward." "He would send her flowers, and she would send him cards. I wanted to keep it going, so this year I sent her flowers instead, and she wrote me back.
Top showbiz news "He wasn't keen on having his name on things, or people knowing about his charity work, so a lot of it went under the radar," said Andre.
