Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort requested early prison release over fears of contracting the coronavirus behind bars, according to a report by lisettevoytko
, citing a Bureau of Prisons spokesperson. Thousands of nonviolent offenders in state and county jails have been released in New York City, Georgia, California and Houston, Texas.Manafort is serving a seven-year sentence at a Pennsylvania federal prison for bank fraud and tax evasion.
During his 2018 trial,Manafort appeared “pale” and “weak,” attending one hearing in a wheelchair while missing a shoe; at the time, his defense said he was suffering from gout and other maladies. In their letter requesting release, Manafort’s lawyers said the prison has no confirmed cases of COVID-19, but that “it is only a matter of time before the infection spreads to staff and inmates at FCI Loretto.
