Pasadena to host take-back event for unused, expired or unwanted meds
In October, more than 120 pounds of unwanted, outdated medicines were collected at an event hosted by the Pasadena Police Department.The Pasadena Police Department, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Agency and Bay Area Council on Drugs & Alcohol, will host a local edition of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 22.will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Walgreens Pharmacy at 3707 Spencer Highway. The event will collect unused, expired or unwanted medications.
“They can bring the medication as is, meaning with the label and all,” Pasadena Police Department spokeswoman Officer Jessica Ramirez said. “The medications are incinerated; so there is no need to take off labels.Ramirez, who has worked the drug take-back event since 2010, said the collection will be a drive-through event.
“We will be in the parking lot under a tent with traffic cones and signs directing people where to go,” she said. “We will still hold it at that location rain or shine. That Walgreens has a covered area on the side of the building near the entrance that we will use if it rains.”to find a location near to them.
According to the DEA, most people who misuse prescription drugs get them from family, friends and acquaintances.In Pasadena, a little over 120 pounds of pills were collected. Nationwide, 324 tons of prescription drugs were collected at 4,902 sites. By comparison, Pasadena’s October 2018 event saw 220 pounds of medications come in, while 177 pounds were turned over in April of that year.Since 2010, 8,318 tons of medicine have been collected nationally.
